about

"Small Fish, Big Pond" captures the feeling of stepping out of one's comfort zone and confronting the unfamiliar. Having spent eight years residing in the quaint town of DeLand, Florida -- population 25k -- I probably overstayed my welcome. However, I eventually realized that my aspirations outgrew the offerings of a small town. This prompted a relocation to the bustling expanse of New York City, where I was promptly confronted by the sheer insignificance of my prior accomplishments. I transformed from a prominent figure in a confined domain to an inconspicuous organism in a vast sea.

Sonically, the composition embarks on a voyage, mirroring the metamorphosis from integrating ego obliteration to discovering one's rhythm amidst adversity.

The initial movement of the piece adopts the enigmatic and disorienting 5/4 time signature, synergizing with ascending Shepard Tones to articulate the sensation of an unending ascent from rock bottom. The subsequent movement represents the epiphany that life's essence is carved by one's determination, irrespective of external conditions. Ultimately, the composition crescendos into a jubilant dance, a celebration of navigating the tides of fate and finally aligning them favorably.

"Small Fish, Big Pond" resonates as a testament to the odyssey of personal evolution, encapsulating the journey from obscurity to self-discovery in the throes of an unfamiliar place.
